A Zen dialogue with a cockroach. Through calligraphy, I approach the space between the cockroach and myself. During my research with cockroaches, I sometimes felt as though I were touching an underlying principle of the universe.
Calligraphy contains a Zen-like method for understanding the world. As we write, the opposition between subject and object begins to dissolve. Am I doing calligraphy, or is the cockroach making me do it? Our roles change so rapidly that even those questions fall away, and I become aware of a wider world around the two of us.
Perhaps this is possible because we are working within the field of computing. I understand writing with a cockroach as a form of Zen dialogue. By rapidly exchanging the roles of subject and object with a creature I may never fully understand, I feel I can begin to see the space between humans and other living beings.
